MIAMI — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott shared an aerial video and photos on Thursday that he described as a team’s rescue at sea.
U.S. CBP Air and Marine Operations, the U.S. Coast Guard, and “international partners” rescued 240 Haitian migrants in the Caribbean, according to Scott.
“The overcrowded vessel was taking on water and in danger of sinking,” Scott wrote. “Our personnel helped prevent what could have been a catastrophic loss of life while stopping yet another illegal migration attempt.”
Scott had a message for desperate migrants and traffickers: “Illegal maritime migration is dangerous, it is not worth the risk, and you will not gain entry into the US.”
Haitians have been experiencing a devastating crisis, as the United Nations estimates that over 1.4 million people have been displaced by gang violence.
In May, Monique Verdieux told the Associated Press that she was forced to flee her home in Port-au-Prince after she saw armed men burning her neighbors’ houses.
“I am now sleeping in the street,” Verdieux, 56, said.
The violence forced Doctors Without Borders to evacuate a hospital for three weeks in Cité Soleil, while there were dozens of gunshot victims.
