Inter Miami took a quick first half lead in the 27th minute after forward Lionel Messi scored his 13th goal of the Major League Soccer season.
It didn’t take Messi much to net his second of the night, as he scored 11 minutes later.
That second goal gave Inter Miami a 2-0 lead, and also helped Messi break a new record in the MLS.
He became the first player in MLS history to score multiple goals in four straight league games, all of which were wins.
The 38-year-old Argentine star now has 14 goals on the season, with an additional seven assists to give him a total of 21 goals and assists in his 15 games played.
Messi has been excellent against New England, scoring seven goals against them — his highest tally against any team — since joining MLS in the summer of 2023.
Manager Javier Mascherano talked about Messi’s performance.
“It’s unbelievable because how he continues doing things that maybe many, many years ago we thought that maybe we couldn’t see at this stage, no?” Mascherano said. “But in the end, he’s a special player. We are lucky to have him.”
With the win, Inter Miami jumped to 5th place in the Eastern Conference.
If Inter Miami continues to win, it could reach first place in a matter of weeks.
Inter Miami is back in action on Saturday as they host Nashville SC at Chase Stadium.
The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
