MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Wednesday that the organization’s approach to free agency and roster construction this year was about balancing aggressive moves with long-term stability.
“Steve has never given us a directive on how to do it. Every year is different,” Grier said, referring to team owner Stephen Ross. “At some point you have to reset when you’ve made aggressive moves. For us, it was just good business sense but we also had to get younger.”
Much of that reset has involved building depth at key positions. Grier expressed confidence in Miami’s cornerback group, even as some outsiders have raised concerns.
“(Anthony) Weaver and Mike (McDaniel) have been honest with you all. We feel good about the room. Adding Rasul (Douglas) and Minkah (Fitzpatrick) was huge for us. Some of the guys are young but they have to prove it on the field,” Grier said.
Grier also said that cornerback Cam Smith is going on the non-football injury list and his timetable to return is unknown.
“Cam has played some his best ball in the last two weeks and we’ll see what happens down the road,” he said.
Grier emphasized the team will look to the waiver wire for additional depth but didn’t disclose exactly what position he is looking to upgrade.
Grier also praised newly signed cornerback Rasul Douglas for his professionalism.
“Rasul keeps himself in great shape and is a constant professional. The timing worked for us to get it done,” Grier said. “We’ll see about being able to play. He’s smart and instinctive.”
On the offensive line, Grier acknowledged the unit’s depth remains a concern but pointed to positive developments.
He confirmed that offensive lineman Kendall Lamm, who had been dealing with back issues, is expected to return. He also said he is excited about starting right tackle Austin Jackson’s continued presence in the lineup.
“Grier said he’s healthy feels good and there’s no concern about his playing ability,” Grier said, noting the importance of both lines. “The offensive and defensive line are always key. And adding to that depth only helps the roster and is important because the team is young but now they have to play well when it matters.”
Despite the challenges, Grier made clear the team’s expectations remain high.
“We were always going to try to win this season. It’s been different on how they approach things. They hold each other accountable especially with the joint practice and players getting on each other. We feel good about the group and what it could be,” he said.
“Our goals are always to be playing good football in December and January,” he added. “It’s about the team and the organization and we feel good about the coaches and players on this roster.”
Miami will begin their season on the road at Indianapolis. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Sept. 7.
