MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Carson Beck opened with 15 straight completions to set a Miami record and the fifth-ranked Hurricanes rolled past Bethune-Cookman 45-3 on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium.
Beck finished 22 of 24 for 267 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions before giving way to Emory Williams in the fourth quarter.
His streak to start the game broke the program’s single-game completion record that had stood since 1986, when Vinny Testaverde connected on 14 in a row against Oklahoma.
The Hurricanes (2-0) struck quickly after winning the coin toss. Freshman Malachi Toney caught two early passes to move the chains, and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. capped the drive with a 1-yard score.
That came after Beck had already connected with CJ Daniels for a 40-yard touchdown to put Miami ahead 7-0 in the first quarter.
Daniels, who made a highlight-reel touchdown catch against Notre Dame in Miami’s Week 1 win, continued his strong start.
He went up over a defender to haul in a fade from Beck late in the first half, his second touchdown of the game and third of the season, giving Miami a 28-3 lead with 38 seconds left in the half. Fletcher added a 16-yard touchdown run earlier, while tight end Marty Brown scored his second touchdown of the season on a short pass from Beck.
Bethune-Cookman managed its lone points on a 32-yard field goal by Juan Dominguez in the second quarter.
Quarterback Timmy Mclain completed 11 of his first 12 passes for 60 yards, but the Wildcats’ offense was stifled by Miami’s front seven.
Senior defensive end Akheem Mesidor blew up Juan Rodriguez in the backfield, while nickelback Keionte Scott kept the Wildcats pinned with tight coverage.
Miami’s defense forced two turnovers in the second half. Linebacker Chase Smith recovered a fumble after Mohamed Toure and Rueben Bain Jr. teamed up to strip Mclain, and freshman safety Bryce Fitzgerald intercepted backup quarterback Cam Ransom in the fourth quarter. Rueben Bain Jr. added a half sack during the defensive surge.
Girard Pringle Jr. added a 14-yard touchdown run to push Miami’s lead to 42-3 early in the fourth quarter.
Despite losing linebacker Wesley Bissainthe to an ejection for targeting in the first quarter, the Hurricanes’ defense held firm. The Wildcats threatened late against Miami’s backups, but Fitzgerald’s first career college interception sealed the rout.
Bert Auburn capped off the final Hurricane scoring drive of the night with a 31 yard field goal, extending Miami’s lead to 45-3 over Bethune Cookman.
