MIAMI GARDENS, Fla, — Carson Beck made history Saturday night, becoming the first Miami Hurricanes quarterback to open a game with 15 consecutive completions as the fifth-ranked Hurricanes jumped out to a commanding first-half 28-3 lead against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.
Beck broke Vinny Testaverde’s single-game program record for consecutive completions versus Oklahoma, which had stood since 1986.
He capped his record-setting start by hitting CJ Daniels on a fade route for a touchdown late in the second quarter, Daniels’ second score of the night and third of the season.
The Hurricanes quickly took control despite a chippy opening. Miami linebacker Wesley Bissainthe was ejected for targeting on the Wildcats’ first possession after a helmet-to-helmet hit.
Freshman receiver Malachi Toney hauled in a pair of first-down catches, and Mark Fletcher Jr. moved the chains with a run before Beck found Daniels for a 40-yard touchdown. The drive lasted less than two minutes and put Miami ahead 7-0.
Fletcher extended the lead midway through the first quarter with a 16-yard touchdown run, capping a nine-play, 74-yard drive that lasted just over four minutes.
Bethune-Cookman struggled to sustain drives against Miami’s defense.
Senior defensive end Akheem Mesidor and nickel cornerback Keionte Scott both made stops behind the line of scrimmage to stall the Wildcats’ offense, and a three-and-out on their fourth drive kept them scoreless.
Marty Brown added a short touchdown run for the Hurricanes in the second quarter, his second of the season after scoring last week in Miami’s win over Notre Dame.
Bethune-Cookman eventually broke through with a 32-yard field goal from Juan Dominguez, who converted after quarterback Timmy McClain completed 11 of his first 12 passes for 60 yards.
Beck then set the record on a short throw to Fletcher before connecting again with Daniels for a six-yard touchdown on a fade route. He finished the half 18 for 19 with 213 yards passing and two touchdowns and in the Hurricanes record books.
Daniels, who made a one-handed snag against Notre Dame in Week 1, once again delivered the highlight before halftime with his second score, helping send Miami into the break leading 28-3.
