Mesidor, Hurricanes defense preparing for Castellanos test in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE — Miami’s defensive front knows the challenge they’ll face Saturday night in Tallahassee when the No. 2 Hurricanes meet rival No. 18 Florida State.

Hurricanes defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor said the priority will be containing FSU quarterback Tommy Castellanos, a dual threat who can both throw and run.

“Really the goal is to keep him inside that pocket, squeeze the pocket, keep him in there, and to limit his rushing or just his capability of getting outside the pocket,” Mesidor said. “It’s gonna be difficult, but it’s something we must do.”

Florida State’s offense has found new life with transfer quarterback Thomas Castellanos at the helm.

Castellanos, who transferred to FSU from Boston College, has quickly become the centerpiece of the Seminoles’ attack, showing his ability to hurt defenses with both his arm and legs.

Through the first third of the season, Castellanos has thrown for 848 yards, completing 45 of 70 passes with four touchdowns and three interceptions. He’s also been dangerous on the ground, adding 217 rushing yards and four scores on 41 carries.

The Hurricanes’ defensive line, anchored by Mesidor and defensive end Rueben Bain, has been one of the team’s biggest strengths this season.

Miami (4-0) will look to pressure Castellanos and disrupt the Seminoles (3-1) when the rivals meet at Doak S. Campbell Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
