MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa spoke to reporters Wednesday as the team prepares to host the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.
Tagovailoa, who has faced a wave of fan criticism during the team’s 1-4 start, said he’s learned to block out the noise.
“I’m not on social media ... I go home, I see my kids. Whether I throw five picks or five touchdowns, we win the game, we lose the game, I get to come home to my kids who are happy to see me every time,” Tagovailoa said.
When asked about his relationship with the other quarterbacks from his 2020 draft class — including Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert — Tagovailoa said they’ve all moved on to different chapters in life.
Tagovailoa and Herbert were selected one pick apart in the 2020 NFL Draft, with Tagovailoa going fifth overall and Herbert taken sixth.
“Everyone’s in different stages in their lives — some are married, some aren’t married, some dating super models ... haven’t really kept in contact with any of them,” he said.
He also praised tight end Darren Waller, who has emerged as a key target early in the season and recording three touchdowns in his first two games.
“You couldn’t even write this up in a way. For a guy of his caliber, in a way for me makes it a little easier when it comes to the size that he has. I can see him. I’m able to adjust,” he said.
With Miami trying to avoid a 1-5 start, Tagovailoa said it’s time to turn things around.
“We got to cut all of that out now and we got to start now if we want to make run and we want to start making moves,” he said.
The Dolphins are coming off a game where they allowed 206 yards rushing to Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle in this past Sunday’s 27-24 loss.
Kick off for Dolphins (1-4) vs. Chargers (3-2) is set for 1 p.m.
