MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Quarterback Justin Herbert threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns, and Cameron Dicker kicked a 33-yard field goal to lift the Los Angeles Chargers to a 27-26 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.
Miami’s opening drive set a rocky tone after wide receiver Jaylen Waddle bobbled a pass that was intercepted by Chargers safety Tony Jefferson.
Los Angeles turned the early takeaway into a 35-yard Dicker field goal for a 3-0 lead.
The Dolphins offense rebounded with a 49-yard touchdown run by De’Von Achane, but the Chargers’ balanced attack proved too much.
Herbert found wide receiver Ladd McConkey for a 5-yard score in the second quarter, then connected with running back Kimani Vidal for a 7-yard touchdown in the third as Los Angeles built a 23-13 lead.
Herbert completed 29 of 38 passes for 264 yards, spreading the ball around to McConkey, who caught seven passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, and Oronde Gadsden II, who added seven receptions for 68 yards.
Vidal powered the ground game with 18 carries for 124 yards, including a 38-yard burst that highlighted Miami’s continued struggles against the run.
The Dolphins entered Week 6 with the last-ranked run defense after allowing 199 yards to the New York Jets and 206 yards to Panthers backup running back Rico Dowdle in weeks 4 and 5.
Tua Tagovailoa went 22 of 30 for 213 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions, including one on Miami’s opening possession.
Waddle led the Dolphins in receiving with six catches for 95 yards, while tight end Darren Waller caught a 7-yard touchdown — his fourth in three games. Achane led the ground attack with 16 carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
The Dolphins took a late 27-26 lead when Tagovailoa found Waller in the end zone with 46 seconds remaining.
But Herbert quickly marched the Chargers downfield after breaking a tackle on linebacker Jaelan Phillips and connecting with McConkey on a 42-yard strike to set up Dicker’s game-winning field goal — his fifth of the day which gave the Chargers a 29-27 lead.
Chargers safety Derwin James sealed game by intercepting a pass on Tagovailoa. It was Tagovaloa’s third interception of the game and seventh of the season.
Game notes:
Rookie defensive tackle Kenneth Grant recorded his first career sack for Miami, one of the few bright spots for a defense that allowed 404 total yards.
After recording a 49-yard rushing touchdown in the first half, Achane has now ran for over 2,000 yards in his career.
Up next:
Miami (1-5) visits the Cleveland Browns (1-5) next Sunday at Huntington Bank Field. Los Angeles (4-2) returns home to face the Indianapolis Colts (5-1).
