WASHINGTON, D.C., DORAL, Fla. — The FIFA World Cup will have 48 teams in 12 groups of four. The U.S. is in Group D. Mexico is in Group A. Canada is in Group B.

The other 45 teams and the groups will be announced during the draw ceremony on Friday at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

U.S. President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are among the guests. Trump will likely receive the FIFA Peace Prize.

Facts to remember

Each group will include a team drawn from one of four pre-selected pots.

The FIFA ranking places Spain, Argentina, France, and England as the four best teams in the world. The European teams are in the UEFA confederation. Argentina is in CONMEBOL.

The rules of the draw require each of the 12 groups to have one or two European teams, and there can’t be more than two teams from the same confederation in a group.

Miami will be hosting the FIFA World Cup bronze final. Rodney Barreto, the Miami Host Committee’s co-chair, said he was excited.

“We’re the melting pot of Latin America,” Barreto said before the draw on Friday during a watch party in Doral.

Raymond A. Martinez, the COO of the Miami Host Committee, was also at the watch party at the Doral Amphitheater.

“This has been in the making since 2018,” Martinez said.

The game times will be announced on Saturday.

In March, six spots will be selected, including four European. These are listed as UEFA Playoff A, UEFA Playoff B, UEFA Playoff C, UEFA Playoff D, FIFA Playoff 1, and FIFA Playoff 2.
