MIAMI — The FIFA World Cup’s first 1930 trophy, designed by Abel Lafleur, was stolen during a public exhibition before the 1966 tournament.
The 18-karat gold World Cup trophy that replaced it was stolen in 1983 in Brazil. The winners have been awarded a gold-plated replica since.
FIFA usually keeps the trophy, designed by Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga, in Zurich. It made a rare 8-hour appearance on Monday in downtown Miami.
The coveted trophy was under a clear case from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Freedom Tower, at 600 Biscayne Boulevard.

The display was a part of the FIFA “Unidad – The World’s Game” temporary exhibit, which includes other historic objects and interactive stations.
At the exhibit, a wall shines bright with the “Rainbow of Shirts,” a display that includes jerseys from all 211 FIFA Member Associations.
