MIAMI — Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo gave back to the South Florida community over the weekend, as he does so often, running his basketball camp at SLAM! Miami.
The camp is just one of many ways that Bam donates his time and money to kids in South Florida.
Throughout the one-day clinic Saturday, Edrice Femi “Bam” Adebayo gave attendees the chance to put in the hard work the athletes do.
“Showing them how to be professionals, showing them what it means to make it to the NBA, because a lot of kids don’t really get the opportunity to really talk to anybody in our profession,” Bam said.
Campers trained like the players and Bam offered tips and hands-on instruction, including lectures, fundamental basketball skills stations, and contact and non-contact games in a high energy, fun and positive environment.
Campers were placed in small groups by age to ensure that each child got maximum instruction.
The comprehensive camp experience is great for athletes of all skill levels, whether they are new to the game or have been playing for years. Individual and team awards were given in each age group.
For the last eight years, Bam’s impact on the court has been significant for the Miami Heat, but he’s also evolved into a fixture off the court, in the community.
More than 200 kids and teenagers joined the Heat captain on the courts at SLAM! Miami Saturday as the clinic was back for a sixth year.
“It means a lot to me. The community is near and dear to my heart, just having these type of opportunities. Like I said, we’re going to be around the kids and being able to impact the community – that’s what matters," Bam said.
Giving back to the community also means winning for the community, which is why Bam is excited about the off-season changes. Ultimately, winning both on and off the court goes hand-in-hand for Bam, and his message for kids in attendance is simple.
“It’s never too late,” Bam said. “I started basketball when I was 12. You know, it’s never too late to start, it’s never too late to put your mind to something and really go for it.”
