Miami Heat equipment manager awaits life-saving transplants, inspired by Alonzo Mourning

MIAMI — Miami Heat equipment manager Rob Pimental is facing the fight of his life -- one that’s all too familiar to a franchise legend.

Pimental learned last June that he needs not one, but two organ transplants: a kidney and a pancreas.

After getting the news, he drove back to work, unsure of what came next.

His first conversation was with team president Pat Riley.

His second was with Alonzo Mourning, who has been thriving for more than two decades after receiving a kidney transplant himself.

While undergoing dialysis and taking medication, Pimental has continued working, balancing his responsibilities with the team along with his roles as a father and husband.

It’s part of a playbook Mourning has helped him build as he waits for what he calls the most important call of his life.

Pimental and Mourning say the message goes beyond one person’s journey.

With April marking National Donate Life Month, they’re urging people to consider becoming organ donors, highlighting a critical need nationwide.
