This Week in South Florida: Sam Kaufman

Key West Commissioner Sam Kaufman joins TWISF to talk state crackdown on rainbow crosswalks

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Key West commissioners are officially honoring the city’s rainbow crosswalks and historic “gayborhood” as a treasured cultural district.

But there’s a new problem: a state transportation bill that outlaws street art. The law cites safety and uniformity in road signage, though rainbow crosswalks have come to symbolize pride in a state where leaders often target what they call ideology.

On Friday, Delray Beach received a letter from FDOT giving the city until Sept. 3 to remove its rainbow mural crosswalk — or the state will do it, and Delray Beach will have to pay.

Back in Key West, the commission is asking the city attorney for legal options to preserve the rainbow crosswalks on Duval Street.

Sam Kaufman, a Key West commissioner who sponsored both the proclamation and the resolution on the city’s rainbow roads, discussed the move on “This Week in South Florida” on Sunday.
