Miami women’s basketball defeats Barry, 88-28, in exhibition win
Miami women’s basketball kicked off its season with an impressive 88-28 exhibition win over Barry University on Wednesday evening at the Watsco Center. From the jump ball to the final buzzer, Miami was in total control of this game both offensively and defensively. Miami forced 28 total turnovers while allowing Barry to shoot only 19.3% from the field. They were also able to turn their defense into offense, scoring 32 points off turnovers. Miami will begin its regular season against Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. at the Watsco Center.

Barry U student sits on chair, exposes himself in female’s dorm room, police say
Later that night came the actions that led to the charges against the Barry University student – named on the arrest form as Georg Simon Simon but on another incident report as Georg Simon Trompler. Simon Trompler, the victim and another student, identified as a witness, went to the victim’s dormitory room last Saturday night. The witness told police Simon Trompler did leave to go to his own dorm room across the hall. The victim told police that her door was unlocked, but closed, and she had not invited the man to return. Scared, she said, she then ran to a friend’s dorm room.
Fast-tracked graduation sends local students straight into the coronavirus fight
Not so for some universities that are graduating health care students early. Seventeen Barry University students will be graduating five weeks early so they can head straight to the front lines in helping treat patients during the pandemic. “They’re ready, they’re willing, they’re able,” said Dr. John McFadden, dean of Barry’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. There’s people that need me.”McFadden said the school made the decision to speed up graduation based on what it heard from hospitals and health care partners. McFadden said all 17 students graduating early have met or exceeded requirements.
Barry University student accused of having gun in dorm room
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – A Barry University student was arrested Monday after a gun was found inside his dorm room, authorities said. According to his arrest report, a resident assistant at the university in Miami Shores saw multiple people who were not students at the dorms on Monday. Only students and employees are currently permitted on campus because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Police said the resident coordinator and an officer went to Donald Preston Brown’s dorm room and found three people there who were not students. The resident coordinator ordered the people to leave the property and searched the room, ultimately finding a gun underneath a blanket on top of Brown’s bed, the arrest report stated.
Health care students graduating early to help fight coronavirus
MIAMI, Fla. – Barry University is pushing up the graduation of some health care students so that they can quickly join the front lines in battling the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of graduating May 9, seniors in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Cardiovascular Perfusion Program will now graduate on April 11. “Cardiovascular perfusionists are specialists who work in operating rooms and critical care units with heart and lung machines and other mechanical support machines. The scope of their practice includes long term support for respiratory and cardiac failure,” the school said. Barry Universitys annual Nun Run attracts 500-plus runners
This was the Universitys second annual 5K/8K timed race with many runners dressed as nuns adding laughs. Other wonderful nominees included Linda Hartwell, from Coral Gables Womans Club; Amy Spadaro, Homestead Womans Club; Sylvia Heller, Womans Club of Coconut Grove; Joyce Windhorst, Cocoplum Womans Club; Zamira Diaz, El Portal Womans Club; Lorraine Harris, Northeast Womans Club; and Shirley Padron, Miami Womans Club. The GFWC Coral Gables Womans Clubs Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger on Giralda Avenue in the Gables will be held on Tuesday, Mar. This months party will benefit the Coral Gables Rotary Clubs International Committee programs in Haiti. This is a chance to visit select private gardens in the great Coral Gables and Pinecrest areas.

So begins the We Keep Us Safe Summit, an all-day conference discussing mass incarceration, pretrial detention, and cash bail in Miami. The October event was an early kickoff to the Dream Defenders' new campaign, Free the Block. Dream Defenders, a Florida-based community organization fighting racial injustices in the state, demand an end to the use of cash bail and pretrial detention in Miami. As part of the campaign, Dream Defenders is hosting regular court-watching sessions, modeling the work of other national organizations working on abolitionist reforms. Dream Defenders, however, says building an additional county jail, even to replace a crumbling one, would create a financial incentive for more people to be jailed.
