The total number of people who are receiving traditional state unemployment benefits fell to 5.5 million from 5.8 million. But Chair Jerome Powell warned that the next three to six months will likely be painful for the unemployed and small businesses as pandemic cases spike. Unless Congress acts to extend that aid, benefits will end completely for an estimated 9.1 million unemployed people. Some federal aid appears likely to arrive soon. On Wednesday, congressional negotiators closed in on a $900 billion COVID-19 economic relief package that would deliver additional help to businesses, $300 per week jobless checks and $600 stimulus payments to most Americans.

He managed to cover all his bills when the federal government was providing $600 a week in jobless aid. And his current unemployment aid will expire in just over two weeks if it isn't extended. McGraw has also worked with an advocacy group, Step Up Louisiana, in support of extending jobless benefits. That's when two jobless aid programs that the federal government created in the spring are set to expire.
