Investigators say fire in Fort Lauderdale home started in teen girl’s room

2 children injured in dog attack in Lauderhill
LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Two children were injured during a dog attack on Thursday evening in Lauderhill, one of who was hospitalized, authorities confirmed. He said Lauderhill Fire Rescue personnel transported the boy to Broward Health Medical Center in serious condition. The attack occurred while the seriously injured victim was visiting family members at a home. Santiago said he and two other children went outside to play video games and the home owner’s dog followed them outside. Santiago said the dog was secured inside the home and has since been surrendered by the owner to police.

In the fall of 2020, hospital officials recognized how stressed employees were under the weight of dealing with COVID-19 amid all their other duties, and decided to start special pet therapy sessions for healthcare workers. “Canine-Assisted Therapy comes to visit day shift, and they also come at night so our night shift can benefit from the dogs and they absolutely love it. So they come once a month to visit our staff,” said Jenny Mackie with Broward Health Medical Center.

Surveillance video released of person sought in fatal Fort Lauderdale shooting
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police released surveillance video Thursday that captured a man who they believe was involved in a fatal shooting last month. The shooting occurred shortly after 3 p.m. Feb. 12 in front of a business in the 800 block of Northwest 10th Terrace. The video shows a man wearing a black hoodie and black pants exiting a vehicle shortly before the shooting occurred. Police said the shooting occurred off camera and then the man is seen running back toward the vehicle, before fleeing the scene. Detectives have recovered the vehicle seen in the video, but the suspected gunman remains at large.

Judge: Mother who shot son must undergo mental health evaluation
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 16-year-old boy remained at Broward Health Medical Center on Wednesday after officers accused his mother of shooting him and a man in Fort Lauderdale. Gwendolyn Whitfield-Dorsey appeared in front of Broward Circuit Court Judge Tabitha Blackmon during a virtual hearing to face two counts of attempt premeditated murder. During the hearing, a defense attorney said the 32-year-old mother worked at Publix. Blackmon ordered Whitfield-Dorsey to undergo a mental health evaluation and to avoid all contact with her son and the man who was injured. Man fatally shot while driving in Lauderhill
LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Lauderhill police are investigating after a man was fatally shot while driving over the weekend. The shooting was reported just after 10 p.m. Sunday in the area of 7500 W. Oakland Park Blvd. According to Lauderhill police Lt. Mike Santiago, officers responded to the scene and found the victim, Ta’Quan Smith, 27, of Lauderhill, unresponsive inside his vehicle with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. According to Santiago, it appears that Smith and another driver were heading west on Oakland Park Boulevard when the other driver shot at Smith for unknown reasons. Ex-Broward Health exec charged with bribery, extortion, money laundering
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A former Broward Health purchasing director was in federal court Friday and stands accused of giving lucrative government contracts to vendors in exchange for bribes, prosecutors say. Brian Bravo, 46, is also accused of directing bribe money to various bank accounts in an attempt to conceal the crimes. Bravo, of Pembroke Pines, worked as the hospital system’s corporate procurement officer and director of materials management for about a decade. From 2008-2015, investigators say Bravo “engaged in a kickback scheme with vendors that provided products and services to Broward Health, including health care products, linens, compression sleeves, and printer repairs. Authorities say the case was investigated by the FBI’s Miami office and it is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey N. Kaplan.

Man was driving 92 mph in 35-mph zone before he killed pregnant woman, cops say
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A North Lauderdale man was speeding nearly 60 mph faster than the limit before a crash that killed a pregnant woman over the Labor Day holiday weekend in Oakland Park, investigators say. Faustin, 27, turned himself in to BSO detectives last month and faces charges of vehicular homicide, four counts of reckless driving, driving while license suspended and violation of probation. Investigators say Faustin was driving a 2019 Toyota Corolla westbound on East Oakland Park Boulevard in the center lane, approaching the intersection of North Dixie Highway. Ybanez, who was six months pregnant, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. BSO also says Faustin was driving while knowing his license had been suspended since May 15, 2017.

Vedner Jacsaint, 32, was shot to death around 6:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lauderhill Point apartment complex off Northwest 19th Street and 31st Avenue. “This is not a way to tell people,” Angel Guillaume, his sister-in-law, said as Jacsaint’s mother cried. Loved ones told Local 10 that Jacsaint nearly died in a car wreck two years ago. There is also a GoFundMe set up to help the family pay for Jacsaint’s funeral.

Surveillance video shows one of the robbers holding a teenager at gunpoint and demanding he hand over his jewelry while a second robber tried to rob the other victim, authorities said.
