Lauderdale-by-the-Sea pier partially collapses as wind, waves from Nicole impact area
While the impact from now Tropical Storm Nicole is expected to cause much more issues for areas further north, one South Florida area saw some destruction from the storm that strengthened into a hurricane before being downgraded Thursday morning.
Broward leaders say they had to close beaches. Businesses expect to suffer.
LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. In Broward County, leaders say it was necessary to close beaches for the upcoming July 4 weekend, particularly with surrounding counties making that decision. We know if we stay open, well have a crowd here, Broward Mayor Dale Holness said. Our restaurants and our businesses will be open on the Fourth of July, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Mayor Chris Vincent said. Tables spaced out on the pier will stay open. We can still have a celebration as long as people stay social distanced and follow the rules.
Mayors keep seats after elections in three Broward County cities
PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Mayors in two cities in northeast Broward County and one in southern Broward County will keep their posts after results of Tuesday’s election. With all six precincts reporting, Troast had 1,832 votes while Marshall had 793 votes. With 2 out of 2 precincts reporting, Vincent received 1,193 votes to Graziano’s 438 votes. With 51 precincts reporting, Ortis had 12,810 votes while Castillo garnered 10,412 votes. With 13 of 13 precincts reporting, Schwartz won with 3,206 votes to O’Loughlin’s 2,153.
