WEATHER ALERT

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

EDDIE MURPHY

“You People” review: The issue with performative wokeness

They are forced to reckon with their separate identities and racial tension over the course of the film. It’s held up by its comedic heavyweights, especially Murphy and Hill, two highly accredited actors in their field. This film is filled with poorly-delivered jokes about race that an elementary school student or drunk uncle could have written. The character feels one-dimensional: we don’t know what happened in his past that would make him lash out at Ezra. For a film that stars two of the greatest comedy actors in the world, it had the potential to do better.

‘Coming 2 America’ Review: The Sequel Nobody Wanted, With Good Reason

“Coming 2 America” proves the only thing worse than a sequel to a classic 1980s film is a sequel that tries to bring the franchise up to contemporary standards. The Rundown: “Coming 2 America” is set 30 years after the original film. Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) of Zamunda is summoned before his dying father, King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones). Weak Spots: “Coming 2 America” is a horribly written comedy that justifies all the fears fans had about a sequel. Instead of Eddie coming to America to find love, his son comes to Zamunda to do the same.

33 years later, Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall return to Zamunda

NEW YORK – When Eddie Murphy made the original “Coming to America,” he was, almost indisputably, the funniest man in America. “Now I take nothing for granted and appreciate everything.”Thirty-three years after “Coming to America,” Murphy and Hall have returned to Zamunda. At the barbershop, where Murphy and Hall also reprise their characters, the conversation bounces from Teslas to transgender people. Before making “Black Panther,” Murphy has said Ryan Coogler approached him about a “Coming to America” sequel. Ruth E. Carter designed the costumes of both “Black Panther” and “Coming 2 America.” Both were shot in Atlanta.

The pandemic is changing Hollywood, maybe forever

This combination photo shows Gal Gadot in a scene from the Warner Bros. Pictures film "Wonder Woman 1984," left, and Yifei Liu in a scene from Disney's "Mulan." A century later, during another pandemic, movies — quotes no longer necessary — are again facing a critical juncture. By streaming service, video-on-demand, virtual theater or actual theater, a steady diet of films have been released under COVID-19 every week. Yet until recently — with only a few exceptions — those haven’t been the big-budget spectacles Hollywood runs on. “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Soul” are essentially very expensive advertisements for those streaming services.
