Defying pandemic, feminists in Spain decry far-right attacks

While staying at a distance from each other, women attend an International Women's Day gathering at an avenue in Barcelona, Spain, Monday, March 8, 2021. Women in Spain are marking this year's International Women's Day with static protests, bicycle fun-rides and small-sized events to prevent gatherings that could trigger a new spike of coronavirus infections. (AP Photo/Emilio Morenatti)MADRID – Women in Spain on Monday marked this year’s International Women's Day with static protests, pot-banging, bicycle fun rides and other small-sized events to prevent gatherings that could trigger a new spike of coronavirus infections. Spain's thriving feminist movement has claimed a few victories in recent years, including the adoption of gender violence laws and forcing judicial reforms regarding sexual abuse. Far-right activists, meanwhile, have campaigned against gender violence laws that they say discriminate against men and lambasted the government’s push to make consent in sexual relations legally mandatory.

Historic heart of Los Angeles on life support from COVID-19

A boy chases a bird on an empty Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles, Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020. If the procession were held this year, they would find many of the businesses on Olvera Street shuttered. The Mexican market, known as the birthplace of Los Angeles, has been particularly hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with shops and restaurants closed and others barely hanging on. California is enduring by far its worst outbreak of the coronavirus, and Los Angeles is among the locations seeing the greatest spike. But the impact on Olvera Street is somewhat unique.

Florida Grand Opera meets the pandemic challenge

For those who were looking forward to the 2020 Florida Grand Opera season, the temporary closing of the Arsht Center and Broward Center was disappointing but certainly a smart move. Local Coral Gables residents Lynn Bauer and Susan Medina sit on FGO’s Education Board and Susan’s dog, Koda, was in the cast of the show. It always is great to see members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club and Coral Gables Rotary participating in these events weekly. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Coral Gables Woman’s Club made more than 35 giant food baskets to deliver to the families of the children treated in the club free children’s dental clinic. Finally, a shout out to Miami Rotary Club for its fourth annual Basket Brigade with the goal of feeding 300 families for Thanksgiving.

'They're addicted to me': How immigrants keep U.S. heartland cities afloat

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) - One evening last fall, Jawad Rahimi held forth in his downtown bodega as a steady stream of hockey fans en route to a St. Louis Blues game mingled with his neighborhood regulars. A typical day brings a steady flow of customers who come for beer, snacks or just to banter in his St. Louis corner store. In St. Louis and elsewhere, immigrants are helping arrest population decline in urban areas caught on the losing end of an internal U.S. trend. Increasingly, people and jobs are concentrating in a few dozen high-performing metropolitan areas, leaving others struggling to maintain population, economic growth rates, or both.
