Alaska tribe to decide fate of European explorer statue

ANCHORAGE, Alaska The mayor of Anchorage has asked the Native Village of Eklutna to determine what happens to a statue of a British explorer following calls for its removal as monuments to historical figures are being dismantled across the country. The statue is of Captain James Cook, who came to Alaska in 1778 in what is now known as Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet while searching for the Northwest Passage as an explorer for the British government. Leggett said this is the most significant recognition from an Anchorage official of the village being a sovereign government. The Native Village of Eklutna is the only tribal government within the boundaries of the Municipality of Anchorage. A decision has not yet been made on what will happen to the statue, but Leggett said he would like to see modifications at the statue site that represent the history and voice of the Denaina people.

2 Sydney statues of British explorer James Cook vandalized

SYDNEY An Australian state government leader said on Monday she was considering tougher laws to protect monuments after two statues of British explorer James Cook were vandalized in Sydney. Two women were charged with defacing a statue with spray paint in downtown Hyde Park over Saturday night. Another statue was discovered spray painted in the eastern suburb of Randwick on Sunday morning in an unrelated attack, police said. Prime Minister Scott Morrison last week apologized for words he used last week to reject calls for his Sydney electoral district of Cook to be renamed. Cook came ashore in the district in 1770 in what was to become the site of the first British colony in Australia.

Australian prime minister apologizes for 'no slavery' claim

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended the legacy of British explorer James Cook, who in 1770 charted the site of the first British penal colony in Australia, which became present-day Sydney. Satirical website Betoota Advocate ran a headline, "'Australia Never Had Slavery,' Says P.M. Who Thinks The Sugar Cane Just Cut Itself for 100 Years." State Lands Minister Ben Wyatt, an indigenous Australian, described Belgiums King Leopold II as an evil tyrant who should not be honored. Morrisons denial of Australian slavery came as a second blow to many indigenous Australians after he expressed gratitude after Floyd's death that Australia did not share the U.S. problem of police violence against the black population. A statue of Cook in a Sydney park was a focus of anti-racism protesters in Sydney on Friday.

Retail marks milestone: Storefronts peddling services overtake those selling clothes and other goods

Does it ever feel like your neighborhood strip centers are transforming into endless rows of nail salons, pizza joints and gyms? Retailers selling goods such as a Gap or Victoria's Secret fell 4.5% to 1.1 million shops during the period. Taking those shifts into account, service tenants now make up 52.6% of America's retail space, while companies focused on selling goods account for 47.4% of space, JLL said. In 2002, retailers selling products made up 53.2% of physical retail, it said. The growth in service-based businesses "will plateau at some new percentage," said James Cook, director of retail research at JLL.

Mori tribe bans replica of Captain Cook's ship from docking

(CNN) - A Mori tribe has banned a replica of Captain James Cook's ship the Endeavour from docking at its village next month, during a national commemoration of the British explorer's first encounter with indigenous New Zealanders. The head of the Ngti Kahu iwi, or tribe, said his group were not consulted by the government about plans to bring a replica to the region. The ship is set to form part of a flotilla that will travel around New Zealand in October, under a celebration called "Tuia 250" or "Encounters 250." Following the announcement by the Ngti Kahu iwi, RNZ reported that other tribes in nearby regions said they would not be holding welcoming ceremonies for the flotilla. The Tuia 250 event has been organized by New Zealand's Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
