For Anthony Hopkins, a grandfather role with personal echoes
The “heart and soul” of a film is an often-overused term, but it’s practically unavoidable when it comes to Anthony Hopkins in James Gray’s “Armageddon Time.” Gray’s autobiographical film, drawn with exquisite detail from his childhood growing up in 1980s Queens, New York, follows an 11-year-old named Paul (Banks Repeta) with dreams of becoming an artist. Made with both nostalgia and self-examination, “Armageddon Time” touches on larger social currents — a Black classmate (Jaylin Webb) faces distinctly different opportunities at school; the Trump family makes an appearance — while crafting a vivid portrait of Gray’s Jewish-American family.news.yahoo.com

Director James Gray muses on 'Ad Astra'
The director of "Ad Astra" is apologizing for keeping things highbrow, which is no reason to apologize at all. Anyone who has watched a Gray movie, which he writes or co-writes as well as directs, will know this extends to his filmmaking. "Ad Astra," Gray's seventh feature, sees the director handed a significantly larger budget than usual to realize his ambitious near-future sci-fi thriller. "Ad Astra" wrestles with it too (although it would be egregious to spoil the film's answer). "Ad Astra" is released in the UK on September 18 and in the US on September 20.
