Breast cancer patient wins Miami-Dade’s Teacher of the Year award

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Teresa Ellen Murphy, a breast cancer patient, won the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ 2022 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year Award. To continue teaching during chemotherapy, the 27-year veteran created a daily chart to help parents monitor their progress. Murphy is known to involve her students in community service projects such as collecting toys for homeless children. After she suffered a stroke in 2012, she taught her kids about stroke prevention. In a statement, Miami-Dade public schools reported she has taught her students about “the power of determination, positivity, and perseverance.”

Man surrenders after standoff causes park, street closures in Aventura

AVENTURA, Fla. – Police officers closed streets and a public park during a standoff with a man who refused to come out of an apartment on Friday afternoon in Aventura. Officers closed Founders Park at 3105 NE 190th St. They also redirected traffic on West Country Club Drive from the William Lehman Causeway to 190th Street. A SWAT team focused on a third-floor unit at Camden Aventura Apartments at 3100 NE 190 St. The man walked out of the apartment building in handcuffs about 5:25 p.m. and no one was injured, police said.

Driver crashes into apartment building in Dania Beach

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A woman was parking her Kia sports utility vehicle when she crashed on Friday into the apartment building where she lives in Dania Beach. The debris from the two-story building was scattered in the parking lot at 4200 SW 53 Ct. The woman said she was unable to break when she crashed into her neighbor’s apartment. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded. No one was injured in the crash.

'Move forward’ is purpose of new building says head of Broward schools when asked why no plaque for MSD victims

Local 10′s Janine Stanwood, who was at the Friday night opening, wrote to the Broward County Public School district after parents of some of the murder victims expressed their views. Were there future plans to add another plaque or some other memorial at the building, and why was a tribute to the school board the only dedication? In a statement from Robert W. Runcie, Superintendent, Broward County Public Schools, sent to Local 10, Runcie said that every BCPS school building has a plaque that identifies the school board of Broward County and the project architect. Runcie said that an additional commemorative plaque would be a decision made by the school community, including the school’s teachers and staff. Alhadeff also said the plans to add a water feature to honor the 17 victims had to be put on hold due to the economic downturn during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mammogram Monday: Dense breast tissue can be a warning sign

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Local 10 continues a weekly series of segments looking at everything from risk factors to the latest treatment approaches. In today’s “Mammogram Monday,” a look at a very common factor that can affect screening and diagnosis: Dense breasts. A family history of breast cancer led her to start screening in her mid 30s, earlier than women of average risk. “My mom several years ago was diagnosed with breast cancer, as was my father’s sister,” she said. “If a patient has a strong family history of breast cancer then they would typically recommend other studies,” Kesmodel said.

Shots fired outside Fort Lauderdale Walmart following attempted robbery

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Officers are searching for a pair of suspects after shots were fired outside a Broward County Walmart. Authorities said they received a call of an attempted robbery just before 7 p.m. Wednesday. According to Fort Lauderdale police, one suspect walked up to door of Walmart liquor store just as an employee was exiting with a bag of money and two security guards. Officers said they are searching for a four-door silver sedan that was occupied by the attempted robber and his driver. Fort Lauderdale police said the unarmed Walmart security officers “really took a gamble and put their lives in danger.”Investigators are hoping to review surveillance video.

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – People living in an Opa-locka apartment complex are cleaning up after their homes flooded in what has become a common occurrence. They told Local 10 News it happens every time it rains, and no matter how much they complain, nothing is ever done. Local 10 News' Janine Stanwood tried reaching out to the property owner, which touts on its website renovations done to the complex several years ago. Senator Marco Rubio sent a letter to the owners, asking why conditions were still “slum-like” even after millions of dollars in renovations using public money. The Department of Housing and Urban Development acknowledged the owner’s failure to maintain the property.

Sea wall collapses near Hallandale Beach condominium

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A sea wall collapsed Thursday in Hallandale Beach and some vehicles were parked dangerously close to the edge. David Weeks told Local 10 News he was woken up after 11 p.m. Thursday and was told that his car was hanging over the edge of his condo’s sea wall that was washing away. “So I throw on some pajamas, run downstairs and, sure enough, my car is tilted into the water.”Weeks said a white car parked next to his was even more precariously dangling off the edge. Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue officials said the sea wall at the Plaza Towers North Condominium partially collapsed into the intracoastal. “I mean, if it was daytime and someone was walking by, that’s a problem.”Management at the property told Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood that they would be fixing the wall.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico. - People in Puerto Rico were stocking up on water and other supplies Monday as they prepare for Tropical Storm Dorian to potentially hit the island. "Just to have enough water and canned food," Taraneh Verdaman told Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood outside a Costco in San Juan. To the south and east in Barbados, Tropical Storm Dorian is encroaching and people in cars are filling up their tanks, as gas station lines extend down the street. They've gathered medical supplies and tents to be self-sufficient if they need to help others.

Man stable after being shot in Miami, police say

MIAMI - A man is stable after being shot Tuesday afternoon in Miami, authorities confirmed. The shooting was reported in the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and 48th Street. Miami police spokeswoman Kiara Delva said the victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. She said a perimeter was set up between Northwest Seventh Avenue to Seventh Court, through 54th to 55th streets, as officers searched for the shooter, who was seen running away. Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood saw a man being detained by police at an Exxon gas station on Northwest 54th Street and Seventh Avenue, but authorities said he has only been detained for questioning and is not facing charges at this time.

Broward County school district is safer than it's ever been, Runcie says

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. - Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said the school district is ready for the more than 270,000 students who will start the new school year on Wednesday. "Safety measures that we have put in place in Broward County are substantial, significant and we are a far safer district than we've ever been," Runcie told Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood. Since 2018's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, school districts are required to have armed officers at every school. Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony made an offer to the Broward school district to allow his department to take over policing countywide. "When school opens on Wednesday, we will have a safe school officer at every school," Runcie said.

Florida Gun Show goes on in Pembroke Pines despite opposition

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. - A gun show is coming to Pembroke Pines, but some residents and commissioners said they don't want it after the recent mass shootings in Texas and Ohio. Opponents said they are concerned about the "gun show loophole" -- private gun sales that happen at some shows that don't require background checks. "We built a civic center at the request of the residents of Pembroke Pines so that they would have a family-friendly place to go," Pembroke Pines Commissioner Angelo Castillo said. Khaled Akkawi, organizer of the Florida Gun Show, said this won't stop the event from happening this weekend. After the 2018 Valentine's Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fort Lauderdale residents protested against a Florida Gun Show event.

USPS mail carrier caught on camera driving over front lawn of home

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. - A mail carrier is coming under fire for driving over a homeowner's front lawn in northeast Miami-Dade to deliver the mail. Postal Service truck driving up the lawn to get as close as possible to the mail box. According to Kochlany, the mail carrier drove the truck across her lawn every day around 4:45 p.m. over at least the last several days. Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood was at the home Friday afternoon and spotted the alleged postal lawn parker herself. But I just find it a little odd that someone would just drive through your lawn," Kochlany said.
