NFL Owner Jerry Jones’ Latest Scandal Is a Doozy

Even by NFL standards, Jerry Jones’ latest scandal seems purpose-made for the tabloids. Last week, the president and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys was sued by a 25-year-old woman who claims Jones is her biological father — and that he paid her mother $375,000 to keep quiet about it. Jones’ rap of abrasive and lascivious moments is long. He disregarded the league’s revenue-sharing agreement while striking his own sponsorship deals; has shown up in racy photographs with strippers; and kept an executive on the payroll for six years after he was caught allegedly filming cheerleaders changing in their locker room — and after he took “upskirt photos” of Jones’ own daughter in 2015. But Jones is also immensely successful, having turned the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise (at an estimated $6.5 billion). The question is, does Jones get too much of a pass from fans, players, and the news media?

(AP Photo/Michael Ainsworth)ARLINGTON, Texas – Dak Prescott's brother wasted little time trying to show the upbeat side of the Dallas quarterback in a hospital bed after a gruesome ankle injury that ended his season Sunday. The rush of well wishes on social media was even faster during what ended up being a 37-34 victory for the Cowboys over the winless New York Giants. Former Dallas quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman and reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City were among them.

Forbes: Cowboys most valuable NFL team at $5.7 billion

(AP Photo/LM Otero)Forbes estimates the Dallas Cowboys are the NFL's most valuable franchise at $5.7 billion, the 14th consecutive year they've held that distinction. According to the magazine, Jerry Jones' team is also the most valuable franchise in the world. Rounding out the top 10 are the New York Jets ($3.55 billion), Chicago Bears ($3.52 billion), Washington ($3.5 billion), Philadelphia Eagles ($3.4 billion) and Houston Texans ($3.3 billion). On average, each team in the NFL is worth $3.05 billion, an increase of 7% from last year. And four teams (Cowboys, Giants, Patriots and Rams) are worth at least $4 billion.

Jerry Jones suggests wiggle room over Cowboys' anthem policy

Jerry Jones sidestepped the question of whether he would change his policy requiring Dallas Cowboys players to stand during the national anthem. Two years ago, Jones wouldn't even support players staying in the locker room during the national anthem, declaring the club's policy was for players to be on the sideline, “toe on the line." I have nothing to prove as far as where I’m standing with the flag and where the Cowboys stand. “We have many on that team that were thinking about one way and many, many others that were thinking about another way,” Jones said. “I’m going to show grace,” Jones said.

Cowboys' Prescott has eye on present without long-term deal

Dak Prescott stuck with his virtual hiatus trying to get a long-term contract that never came during the offseason. Im not a guy that looks at my future to be honest, Prescott said Wednesday, two days before the first practice of training camp for the Cowboys. He was an almost instant star with the Cowboys, winning 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as a fourth-round pick who replaced injured 10-year starter Tony Romo during his first preseason. The Cowboys made the hotel available to their players, and Prescott estimated 90% of them had essentially agreed to create their own bubble. The Cowboys cleared their COVID-19 reserve list early this week by activating WR Jon'Vea Johnson and CB Saivion Smith.

Prescott set for franchise tag without long-term Dallas deal

Dak Prescott will play whatever becomes of the 2020 season under the one-year franchise tag after the Dallas Cowboys and their star quarterback couldn't agree on a long-term contract. Clubs had until Wednesday afternoon to reach multiyear deals with players given the franchise tag. Green and defensive end Yannick Ngakoue of Jacksonville haven't signed the one-year contract that goes with the tag. If so, his fate will be different than the other two QBs who have played under the franchise tag. Anthony Harris of Minnesota and Denver's Justin Simmons are set to play under the $11.4 million tag for a safety.

Cowboys' Prescott signs $31M tag, still time for longer deal

Dak Prescott plans to be at training camp with the Dallas Cowboys, if and when it starts, on the richest one-year contract in franchise history. Prescott signed his $31.4 million tender under the franchise tag Monday. By signing the offer under the franchise tag, Prescott is obligated to report for all team activities or risk being fined. The two-time Pro Bowler started his rookie season third on the depth chart after getting drafted in the fourth round out of Mississippi State. Despite missing the playoffs again last season, Prescott had career bests with 4,902 yards passing and 30 touchdowns.

Despite far more support, kneeling might not be widespread

(AP Photo/Mark Zaleski, File)NFL players who want to kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racism have far more support than Colin Kaepernick did four years ago. Lastly, some owners might still have an issue with it despite the leagues support of the players. Whatever our team ends up doing, were gonna support. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones strongly opposed kneeling when Kaepernick began the movement and he hasnt spoken on the issue. ... theyve all dealt with something at some point, whether its with the police or another interaction of just blatant racism, said Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

AP source: Cowboys sign DE Aldon Smith, suspended since 2015

The Dallas Cowboys are taking a chance on another suspended defensive end, signing Aldon Smith to a contract while his playing status in the NFL is uncertain. The Cowboys now have two suspended pass rushers under contract in Smith and Randy Gregory. The 30-year-old Smith had several legal issues as a player with San Francisco and Oakland. He was first suspended with the 49ers in 2014 before receiving a one-year ban in November 2015 with the Raiders. He had 19 1/2 sacks in his second NFL season and was an All-Pro while helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl.

Dallas Cowboys hire Mike McCarthy as new head coach

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy looks on from the sidelines during the first half of an NFL football game against the Green Bay Packers in Detroit, Michigan, October 7, 2018. Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is joining the Dallas Cowboys as the franchise's next head coach, the team announced Tuesday. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fired former head coach Jason Garrett after 10 seasons, a move the team announced late Sunday. "We are extremely grateful to Jason Garrett for his more than 20 years of service to the Dallas Cowboys as a player, assistant coach, and head coach," Jones said in a statement. McCarthy, 56, brings a wealth of experience to the Cowboys, winning 61.8% of his regular-season games in 13 seasons, from 2006 to 2018, with the Green Bay Packers.

Garrett still coach of Cowboys as Jerry Jones stays silent

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett watches from the sidelines in the first quarter of an NFL football game against the Los Angeles Rams in Arlington, Texas, Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019. (AP Photo/Roger Steinman)FRISCO, TX – Jason Garrett was still coach of the Dallas Cowboys on Friday, almost a week after what figured to be a make-or-break season ended without a trip to the playoffs in the final year of his contract. Garrett has been at team headquarters off and on since the season ended, according to two people familiar with the situation. The decision figured to be a difficult one for Jones, who hired Garrett as offensive coordinator before naming Wade Phillips coach in 2007. When Dallas finished the season 5-3, it was almost a foregone conclusion that Garrett would get the permanent job.

Colin Kaepernick's botched NFL workout could strengthen case for second collusion lawsuit, sports lawyer says

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones called the situation between Kaepernick and the NFL "unfortunate," according to an interview with Dallas-based radio station 105.3 The Fan. It's been almost a week since the National Football League's botched its scheduled workout with free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick, with no resolution in sight. One NFL team owner wondered how Kaepernick can help a team in the short and long-term, believing he doesn't fit into his team's future quarterback plans. Kaepernick's lawyers thought the waiver went too far and offered their own version, which the NFL said was "insufficient." Although Kaepernick said he's "been ready for three years," the team owner said the dispute over the workout shows he doesn't genuinely want to return to the field.

On Feb. 14, 1996, a then-43-year-old Belichick was let go as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns after five seasons. That's when Belichick pitched himself to Jerry Jones, according to the Dallas Cowboys owner. At the time, Barry Switzer was the head coach for the Cowboys. Belichick was hired by the Patriots to be the assistant head coach under head coach Bill Parcells on Feb. 16, 1996. The following year in 1997, Belichick signed with The New York Jets as assistant head coach for three seasons before becoming the head coach of Patriots in 2000.
