A group of committed enthusiasts in Miami is doing all it can to save jai alai, the world's fastest ball sport.

Magic City Casino owners made the case that the Seminole Tribe’s monopoly on online betting would hurt its decades old business. A judge agreed.

The Casino @ Dania Beach will be ending its jai alai operation in November after 69 years.

MIAMI – Magic City Casino canceled Thursday’s Jai-Alai performances in Miami’s Flagami neighborhood after sending four players to get tested for the coronavirus. Sandra Rodriguez, a spokesperson of the Magic City Casino, released a statement on Thursday night saying it was done in an abundance of caution. According to the Florida Department of Health’s latest report, the city recorded 16,925 were diagnosed with COVID-19. “We monitor our players with temperature checks and medical questions on a daily basis,” Rodriguez said. Gamblers were lined up and ready to play as a number of casinos in South Florida reopened Friday, including the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood. Also opening: Hialeah Park, The Big Easy in Hallandale Beach, Magic City Casino and the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek and Seminole Classic Casino in Hollywood. First off, anyone entering Hard Rock will have to pass through thermal imaging cameras that detect a potential fever. Hard Rock Internationals chairman Jim Allen says they essentially had to create an entire new manual on protocols to keep everyone safe. Guests were lined up outside that casino before it reopened at 10 a.m. Friday with many of the same safety measures as the Hard Rock.
