Marlins complete an all pitching MLB draft
The Marlins had a plan entering the shortened 2020 MLB draft. A day after taking Minnesota pitcher Max Meyer with their first-round pick, Miami selected five more pitchers in rounds two through five. The focus was clearly pitching as the Marlins used every pick they had on pitching. The Oklahoma native is coming off Tommy John surgery but was considered one of the top high school pitchers in the draft. The Marlins then took Ball State right-hander Kyle Nicolas, Coastal Carolina pitcher Zach McCambley, Jake Eder from Vanderbilt and closed their all pitching draft by selecting Kyle Hurt of Southern California.
Miami Marlins select pitcher Max Meyer with 3rd pick in 2020 MLB Draft
MIAMI For the second consecutive year, the Miami Marlins were working with a top five selection in the MLB Draft. The Marlins decided to pick up an extremely talented right-handed pitcher and drafted Max Meyer from the University of Minnesota with the third overall pick. Meyer was considered by many experts as the best arm in the 2020 MLB Draft, though some had predicted Miami would select left-handed Texas A&M pitcher Asa Lacy. During his three seasons with Minnesota, Meyer has a 2.07 ERA, 187 strikeouts and just 41 walks over 148 innings pitched. Last year, Miami had another top five pick and selected power hitting outfielder JJ Bleday fourth overall.
