UM students react to the death of Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim
Towering musical theater lyricist, composer, and legend Stephen Sondheim took the theater world by storm this week, following the news of his death at the age of 91. The Connecticut-native playwright who tackled emotive, dark themes never been done before in musical theater has theaters named after his legacy, both on West End in London and Broadway in New York. Avian earned six Tony nominations and won twice, for choreographing “Ballroom” and co-choreographing “A Chorus Line.” He won an Oliver Award for choreographing Boublil and Schonberg's musical “Martin Guerre” in London. Avian's association with “A Chorus Line” continued when he directed the 2006 revival on Broadway and the London revival at the Palladium in 2013.

Director Ivo van Hove and producer Scott Rudin decided to omit the tune to speed up the pace of their 2020 revival. "West Side Story" returns to Broadway this week in a drastic new incarnation of the classic musical by Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim. Sixty-two years ago, "West Side Story" performed for 732 Broadway audiences and introduced the world to Stephen Sondheim. But Sondheim said he's actually embarrassed by the lyrics he wrote for the musical.
