Making naming history: First-ever Tropical Storm Eta forms
PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – The tropical disturbance in the central Caribbean Sea became Tropical Storm Eta on Saturday. The 28th named storm of the year makes history as this is the first time Eta has been used to name a storm. Eta is expected to become a hurricane early next week as it approaches the coast of Central America later Monday and Monday night. But if the high were to weaken, or move out earlier than forecast, the storm may lose its push and stall. Tropical Storm Zeta in 2005 formed on December 30 on the other side of the Atlantic.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. Two tropical disturbances are now stirring in the Atlantic, and the one with Florida in its forecast cone is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm Thursday. The next named storm of the season will be Tropical Storm Laura, and it could be a hurricane as it approaches Florida early next week, forecasters say. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Saba and St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Anguilla. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible generally within 48 hours. It could be at or near hurricane strength when it reaches the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico late Saturday, forecasters say.
Remembering “The Great Miami Tornado”
Miami, FL – If you were in South Florida on May 12, 1997, then you certainly remember this one. Usually by May, we in South Florida are thinking toward hurricane season and the perils it can bring. At around 2 p.m., an unusually strong tornado dropped just north of Coconut Grove, right over Silver Bluff Estates. It then crossed I-95, trekked into Downtown Miami, and entered Biscayne Bay. This tornado was strong by South Florida standards.
