SURFSIDE, Fla. – The former mayor of the Miami-Dade County’s Surfside who was beat in 2010 by the incumbent mayor has won re-election in the city’s 2020 general municipal election.

Charles Burkett beat Daniel Dietch, who has been the mayor since 2010. In the city’s one precinct, Burkett received 630 votes while Dietch had 573 votes.

It isn’t Burkett’s first time in the mayoral position. Burkett, raised in Miami Beach, moved to Surfside in 1996. In 2004, Burkett ran for mayor and lost, but in 2006 and again in 2008 he was elected mayor of Surfside.

In 2010, Dietch bested Burkett for the mayoral seat.

The four candidates who obtained the largest number of votes fill the commissioner seats.

From a field of nine candidates for Surfside commissioner, Tina Paul with 715 votes, Eliana Salzhauer with 664 votes, Neilly Velasquez with 601 votes and Charles Kesi, with 487 votes, were the top four vote getters.

In Surfside, every two years, voters go to the polls to fill the mayor and four commissioners’ positions.
