MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A strong cold front is moving through South Florida, bringing the coldest air the region has experienced in nearly four years.
Temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 30s by Friday morning, prompting Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to urge residents to use heating equipment safely.
Local 10 meteorologist Brandon Orr said the cold front moved through the area Thursday, with cold air quickly following behind it.
“We hit our high temperature in the low 70s this morning, and temperatures are already dropping,” Orr said. “By 5 p.m., we’ll have our first 50s on the map.”
Overnight low temperatures are forecast to reach about 43 degrees, with wind chills dipping well into the 30s. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
A few showers developed along the front Thursday but are expected to clear later in the afternoon. Aside from a stray shower this weekend, no significant rain is forecast into next week.
MDFR is sharing cold weather safety guidelines and resources to help residents stay warm and protected as temperatures drop.
MDFR spokesperson Erika Benitez warned that improper use of space heaters and other heating devices during cold weather increases the risk of house fires, fire-related injuries and carbon monoxide exposure.
