BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Hazy and foggy conditions are expected across parts of South Florida on Thursday as a brush fire in northwestern Broward County combines with shifting winds to reduce visibility in some areas.
Temperatures early Thursday were in the upper 50s and low 60s across Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Key West, with inland areas of Broward and Miami-Dade counties in the 60s. Afternoon highs are forecast to climb into the lower 80s.
A brush fire burning just north of Alligator Alley in northwestern Broward County could push smoke and haze toward U.S. 27, western Pembroke Pines, Miramar and Hollywood, and possibly as far south as Aventura, depending on containment efforts, according to the National Weather Service.
Visibility was reduced to about 3 miles in parts of Kendall and Pembroke Pines, and along Alligator Alley near the fire.
The NWS issued a dense fog advisory for inland Broward and inland Miami-Dade counties through the morning. Local 10 meteorologist Julie Durda said the limited visibility is likely due to a combination of low-level moisture, elevated dew points, and smoke from the fire.
Durda said a northwest wind is helping carry the smoke into populated areas, contributing to the hazy start. Conditions are expected to improve later in the day as temperatures warm.
