February 22: Warm Sunday leads to rain and cooler air to start week

A major winter storm clobbering the northeastern U.S. will allow a strong cold front to roll through South Florida later today. We might tie a record high of 87 degrees ahead of the front today and there’s a 20% chance for scattered showers after 3PM.

Look for a big dip in temperatures beginning tonight right though Tuesday with daytime highs only in the lower 60s and morning lows in the 40s (maybe some 30s far western suburbs). Windy, dry weather will increase the risk of brush fires tomorrow so a Fire Weather Watch is in effect.

The core of this arctic airmass will be east of us and moving away by midweek with highs returning to the lower 80s later in the week. There’s still no significant rain in sight through the next 5-7 days.

In the meantime, your travel plans will likely be disrupted by that blizzard up north impacting New York City to Boston so plan on lots of cancellations at the airports including right here in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
