Analyst calls UM football program 'dumpster fire'

ESPN's Paul Finebaum believes Hurricanes should shut down entire program

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum has built a career out of making outrageous statements, but even he may have topped himself when speaking about the Miami Hurricanes on Monday night.

In one of his regular appearances on the sports network, Finebaum claimed that while Miami used to be a college football dynasty, it is now a "dumpster fire."

When talking about the school's firing of head coach Al Golden, college football website 247sports.com says that Finebaum believes UM should choose the nuclear option and eliminate the football program altogether.

"I think Miami should have fired Al Golden last year and avoided the embarrassment this year." Finebaum said about Miami. "This program, which used to rule college football, right now is on life support. I'm not sure where it's going from here. Unless they get the right person for Miami ... you might as well shut it down. Miami is mainly in the past right now in the world of college football."

South Florida native and former FSU quarterback Danny Kanell attempted to settle Finebaum down by telling his co-host that, "You can't shut down one of the best programs in the history of college football."

This isn't the first time a prominent media personality or outlet has suggested doing away with football at the University of Miami. Back in 1995, a Sports Illustrated cover story in the form of an open letter from the writer to then-University president Tad Foote asked the school's leader to shutter the team after a rash of violations within the program.
