FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Tony award-winning Broadway musical “Hell’s Kitchen” is bringing the music of Alicia Keys to center stage in South Florida.

The show tells a coming-of-age story inspired by the singer’s life growing up in New York and it will soon be running at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

The hit Broadway musical brings powerful vocals, unforgettable songs, and a story about chasing your dreams.

“Well, Hell’s Kitchen is the story of Ali, who is a 17-year-old girl who is full of fire, and she’s searching for herself and her purpose all in the backdrop of being in the 90’s,” Roz White, who plays Miss Liza Jane, said. “She’s got a tough mom, who wants her to do the right thing, of course. She’s got a father who is in and out of her life, but then she meets this teacher, who changes her life and gives her the inspiration to be who she’s supposed to become. And she does all this through piano and the amazing music of Alicia Keys.”

“She’s actually a combination of Alicia Keys and her grandmother,” White added. “That’s what this character is based on. So she comes into Ali’s life, she gives her not just piano lessons, but life lessons. They form a strong bond that carries Ali through the story.”

And the show’s message? Remember where your dreams begin.

“The tag for the show is ‘experience where dreams begin,’” White said. “I think the message is to go inside yourself and find where your dreams started, because that’s what propels you to your future.”

But the music of Alicia Keys isn’t just entertainment, some moments hit especially close to home for South Florida audiences, like Keys’ powerful protest ballad.

“’A Perfect Way to Die’ actually speaks of almost, in a futuristic way, the deaths of Sandra Bland and Trayvon Martin,” White said. “It’s pretty deep.”

The musical includes powerful storytelling, Keys’ biggest hits, and a message about purpose and community.

“It’s a night of inspiration, joy, and there are going to be some tears too. But it’s a wonderful story and everyone can see themselves in the story,” White said.

The Broadway hit runs at the Broward Center through March 22. Click here for ticket information.
