MIAMI — If you’re looking for a new way to experience live music in Miami, Wynwood has something that might just scratch that itch.
It’s called “On & On,” and it’s a new rooftop series that blends hip-hop, R&B and live instrumentals.
On & On is fusing artists of today with artists of the past.
“It’s all a nod, of course, to the song, to Erykah Badu, to that era for sure, but it also is really the meaning of the words themselves. We don’t want the party to end,” international recording artist Maya Azucena said.
Inside Wynwood’s Shiso, a new rooftop experience is taking shape, honoring the golden age of hip-hop and R&B, but giving it a live, soulful twist.
“DJ music is great, but live music experience -- you really feel it in your soul,” Michael Rutter, of Forward Hospitality Group, said.
The live music reimagines songs you already know.
“When you do mashups -- a fusion of hip-hop you’ve heard today, Cardi B with Roy Ayers backing music. Or like a jazz song meets a Fresh Prince song. It’s going to be like putting the worlds together,” Azucena said.
The live music features jazz, R&B and improvisation.
“It’s a very dynamic show,” Azucena said. “It has such a nostalgic, incredible, throwback vibe meets today. We’re going to be fusing hip-hop with live R&B classics, mixed with solos and jazz -- it’s going to be the full-on live experience.”
Azucena is leading the way, bringing that 90s feeling back to life for those who grew up with it and for those experiencing it for the first time.
“It’s not an era where we did everything for the camera,” Azucena said. “It was an era where we tried to work out what we were going through, through these songs. We talked about our pain, but at the other side of that song was a celebration.”
The space itself is just as curated, from graffiti details that keep that Wynwood edge, to a rooftop setup built for the experience. The food and drinks are part of the experience too, with craft cocktails and Shiso’s signature Asian smokehouse bites.
“We’ve added a quarter million dollars’ worth of sound and lights on top on our existing sound system and light system, which was pretty extravagant,” Rutter said. “The facility sets up more of a corner view, which I think is very unique. We set up a 40-seat bar.”
The space has room for hundreds, inside and out and a front-row feel from just about anywhere.
“Music is limitless, and music shows us how limitless we are,” Azucena said.
On & On has live performances every Friday night.
