FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After Local 10’s recent story about a man who was captured on camera seemingly taking puppies from a Fort Lauderdale home, Local 10 Animal Advocate Jacey Birch was contacted as he said he had been searching for the puppies’ owners for the last two weeks.
It was a family celebration Wednesday when Pitbull puppies Exodus and Revelation were brought home.
There were hugs and flowers, and even a few tears. Emotions were definitely running high with happiness as the Fields family was reunited with their two lost dogs.
“This is one of the happiest days of my life,” Charles Fields said. “I would like to thank all of Channel 10, and my kids are happy -- the best birthday gift you can ever give. God answered prayers.”
When Charles Fields first saw Paul Gershoffer on his security cameras playing with his puppies, he assumed he was a Good Samaritan bringing them back home after they escaped from the backyard.
“I seen these two puppies on the side of the road and I stopped and I didn’t see nobody around, so I went up to this house, knocked on the door and nothing,” Gershoffer said.
But the problem was Gershoffer didn’t know who the dogs actually belonged to.
“I grabbed the one, put him in my truck and the other one followed me and I got them both safe in the truck, and I went and got them collars and stuff and drove around knocking on doors and nobody seemed to know them,” Gershoffer said.
With no collars or chips, Gershoffer’s girlfriend posted photos of the two brothers everywhere she could.
“We have been trying everywhere -- Petfinder, everything, Facebook, every social media,” Cheryl Thatcher-Mucci said.
But still nothing -- until Local 10’s story aired.
“My buddy called me up and says, ‘Paul, I just seen you on TV.’ So it all worked out. We got the dogs back -- they’re safe and God bless them,” Gershoffer said.
The two escape artists ended up having a two-week vacation with animal lovers Paul and Cheryl, and their dog Daisy, but it seems they also made friends for life.
“I’m going to be Uncle Pauly,” Gershoffer said. “I’ll come visit them and stuff. Yeah, I really got attached to them.”
This story is a good reminder to always have a collar with tags on your pets and make sure they have a microchip too that is always registered with your up-to-date phone number and address.
It could be the one clue to get your pet back to you!
