MIAMI — In Miami’s Little Havana, the rhythm of salsa isn’t just something you hear — it’s something you become.

At the iconic Ball & Chain on Calle Ocho, salsa dancing is on full display as residents and visitors move to live Latin music on the dance floor.

Once known for hosting lessons only on Thursdays, the venue now offers free salsa classes multiple times a week, welcoming beginners with no partner required.

“Salsa and Latin music has always been so full of life and fun,” said Rene Rodriguez, the dancing entertainment director at Ball & Chain.

He said renewed interest in Latin music across generations is helping keep the tradition alive.

“I think a lot of artists like Bad Bunny is kind of bringing it back,” Rodriguez added. “It’s nice to be able to kind of tie the old with the new and just kind of have something new and fresh.”

The lessons focus on fundamentals before moving dancers onto the floor.

Rodriguez guides students through moves that are commonly used when dancing with a partner.

When it comes to style, he says that salsa shouldn’t feel forced.

“People always say, ‘Put your hips into it,’ but it’s kind of something you don’t think about,” he said. “The movement just naturally causes your hip to move.”

Once the music starts, the pace quickens and the lesson becomes a workout — complete with spins, dips and plenty of laughter.

Rodriguez said Ball & Chain’s appeal goes beyond the dance floor.

“The whole Latin community loves this place, but we do get a lot of visitors from all around the world,” he said. “It’s just kind of like the epitome of Miami.”

Free salsa lessons begin nightly at 9 p.m.

Beginners are welcome, no partners are needed — and for many dancers, that makes joining in an easy first step.
