BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — A fire burned more than 6,500 acres of wildland from Tuesday to Wednesday in western Broward County.
The National Guard joined the Florida Forest Service and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue in the firefight.
“This is the Everglades, it’s kind of hard to operate in, you have to stay on the levees ... We are doing the best we can,” said Kevin MacEwen, the FFS Everglades District manager and forest area supervisor.
The crews had contained about 50% of the fire on Wednesday, according to the Florida Forest Service. The wind is blowing the smoke away from Broward County.
The massive fire comes as a historic drought has the Florida Forest Service fighting more brush fires than usual statewide.
