Dog in crate dies after fire erupts inside Miami Springs home

Officials: Fire appears to have started in garage, where Tesla was parked

MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. – Miami-Dade firefighters responded to a house fire Thursday morning in Miami Springs.

The fire was reported around 4:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Hunting Lodge Drive, with seven Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responding.

MDFR Division Chief Mark Chavers compared the blaze to fighting a building or warehouse fire, and said windy conditions made the battle even more difficult.

According to Chavers, it appears that the fire started in the garage of the home where a Tesla was parked.

“When the units arrived, the fire had already burned through the garage doors, burned through the windows, lighting the two cars on the outside of the house, as well,” he said.

Officials said the family’s dog was inside of a crate in the garage and died as it was not able to escape.

Three teenagers and two adults were able to get out of the home on their own before firefighters arrived, Chavers said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No other details were immediately released.
