KEY WEST, Fla. — A man who was working for the city of Key West recently called 911 to report that his assigned white city truck had been stolen from Clarence S. Higgs Memorial Beach, records show.

The public works employee told a 911 dispatcher shortly after 10:40 a.m. on Saturday that he had parked the truck and left the key in the ignition at 1000 Atlantic Boulevard, records show.

“I left my truck running, and somebody jumped in the truck and took off,” the city employee told the dispatcher, according to the redacted audio released by police on Tuesday.

During the investigation, Ralph Major, another city employee, admitted that he had driven away in the city truck to “prove a point,” according to Officer Bradley Fox’s report to dispatch.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Major, 59, on Monday after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest, according to inmate and court records. He surrendered at the jail, according to Shannon Perzel, a Key West Police Department spokesman.

On Tuesday afternoon, Major faced a first-degree misdemeanor charge of misuse of the 911 or E911 system. His bond was $15,000. Monroe County Circuit Judge Albert Kelley was set to preside over the case.

Major is the facilities superintendent for Key West Parks and Recreation, according to the city’s directory. He also advertises dog training services on LinkedIn and Facebook.

Last year, Keys News identified Major as the president of the Key West Junior Football League, a volunteer-led youth sports organization with cheerleading, dance, and football programs.
