Erosion impacts several South Florida beaches after stormy week

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – After several days of stormy weather, Monday was a pretty beautiful day across South Florida.

But when you take a look at the beaches and notice city crews beginning clean up, you can tell that severe storms swept through the area.

After days of high winds and rain, South Florida may have been spared from flooding, but it was the high surf that slammed our beaches.

As a result, tons of sand was swept out to sea and signs of severe beach erosion is what was left behind.

“It is amazing at how much erosion took place during this one storm,” said Dania Beach beachgoer Lynn Rivas. “The erosion was so intense that I’d say a good 12 feet had been taking away from the surface.”

While other portions of the beach were blocked off to visitors completely, Local 10 News spotted city crews working to clean up sand that had washed up into parking lots.

Further north in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, the already dilapidated and shut down pier was damaged even further, with debris seen swept on to the beach.

Another snap of cold weather incoming, combined with the beach erosion, isn’t helping all the businesses along South Florida’s coastline.
