MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A plan to keep drivers from speeding in school zones in Miami-Dade County has now passed.

The plan, proposed by Miami-Dade Commissioner Anthony Rodriguez last summer, passed in the Miami-Dade Commission meeting held on Wednesday in a 10-3 vote.

The plan calls for the placement and installation of speed detection systems on roads during school hours in 206 school zones across the county.

According to the Miami-Dade Police Department nearly 2,500 citations for speeding in a school zone were issued in 2023.

The law was considered for implementation in Miami-Dade County after HB 657 was passed by the Florida legislature last year, which allows local governments to enforce speed limits in school zones.

According to the law, the cameras would be rolling 30 minutes before school starts and 30 minutes after dismissal. Drivers caught driving more than 10 miles per over the posted school speed zone would face fines of a minimum of $100.

County commissioners said the project would be funded through the citations issued to drivers.

RedSpeed USA out of Alpharetta, Georgia will provide the cameras.
