MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A plan to keep drivers from speeding in school zones in Miami-Dade County has moved forward.
The plan, proposed by Miami-Dade Commissioner Anthony Rodriguez this summer, calls for the placement and installation of speed detection systems on roads during school hours in more than 200 school zones.
A commission committee signed off on the plan on Tuesday and it will head to the full commission for a vote.
Earlier this year, HB 657 was passed by the Florida legislature, which would allow local governments to enforce speed limits in school zones.
According to the law, the cameras would be rolling 30 minutes before school starts and 30 minutes after dismissal. Drivers caught driving more than 10 miles per over the posted school speed zone would face fines of a minimum of $100.
It went into effect on July 1, 2023.
