MIAMI — 10-year-old Matthew Castillo is one of 3,550 people in the world diagnosed with a condition called Phelan-McDermid Syndrome, a rare genetic disease caused by the deletion or mutation of a specific part of chromosome 22.

People with PMS are often diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum disorders.

They frequently have severe cognitive disabilities, are nonverbal and have a propensity for seizures and sleep disorders in addition to many other behavioral and medical challenges.

The 7th annual ‘Team Matthew Luis Phelan-McDermid Syndrome’ fundraiser will be held March 13th, 2024.
