Once fertile ground for award-winning green beans, peppers, guava, tomatoes, eggplant, and okra, it is now one of the most sought-after zip codes in South Florida, boasting some of the most expensive homes in the United States.

The city got its start with Reverend Solomon Greasley Merrick, a Congregational Minister, and his wife, Althea Fink, who moved their family from Duxbury, Massachusetts, to the Miami area in 1899. Merrick’s son, George Merrick would later develop the 160-acre tract of land west of Coconut Grove, first purchased for $1,100, into several subdivisions by the early 1920s.

According to the city’s website, more than 1,000 properties are on the Coral Gables Register of Historic Places.

Nearly 50,000 people call Coral Gables home, according to a July 2022 report by the United States Census Bureau.

Happy birthday, Coral Gables!
