Retention pond crash in Miami-Dade affects University Park and Tamiami traffic

FHP: 2 women swim out of submerged Honda

TAMIAMI, Fla. – Florida Highway Patrol troopers temporarily closed the southbound Turnpike extension ramp to westbound Southwest Eight Street early Friday morning in Miami-Dade County.

The crash affected traffic in the University Park and Tamiami areas. The exit is just west of the Florida International University’s main campus.

According to FHP Lt. Alex Camacho, the driver of a Honda sedan drove off the roadway and into a retention pond and the ramp was back open shortly before 8 a.m.

“The 2 female occupants were able to safely exit the vehicle without injury,” Camacho wrote in a statement.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue dispatched divers to the triangle-shaped pond on the western side of the ramp off the Ronald Reagan Turnpike to help remove the Honda.
