Broward judge sets defendant’s bond at $400,000 in Sunrise case of child sex abuse

Deputies arrested Macner Paul on Monday and he appeared in bond court on Tuesday after a Sunrise Police Department detective accused him of sexually abusing a girl when she was 12 and 13 years old. (BSO, BCC)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 43-year-old man who used to own the Bonbagay Tax Group in North Lauderdale was at the Broward County Main Jail Wednesday accused of sexually abusing a girl.

Sunrise Police Detective Colleen McCarthy requested the warrant for Macner Paulā€˜s arrest for abusing the girl when she was 12 and 13 years old, records show.

Broward County Circuit Judge Ernest A. Kollra signed the arrest warrant for Paul, who was born in Haiti and has an arrest record in Broward going back decades.

In the arrest warrant, Kollra recommended a $40,000 bond. Without disclosing any details about the case, the prosecution said it was ā€œnot appropriateā€ and requested a $400,000 bond.

The defense said Paul couldn’t afford it. Broward County Circuit Judge Corey B. Friedman sided with the prosecution on Tuesday.

ā€œIf you do bond out, you will be on a GPS,ā€ Friedman told Paul in court.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies with the VIPER unit arrested Paul on Monday afternoon at 825 NE 42 St., in Deerfield Beach, records show.

Paul faced four counts of lewd or lascivious molestation of a minor, a second-degree felony.

Friedman ordered him not to have contact with minors. Broward County Circuit Judge Michael Lynch is set to preside over the case.
