DORAL, Fla. ā Peak mosquito season is from May to October and Miami-Dade County is testing a new way to help keep the population under control.
The countyās Mosquito Control Division team uses ground spray treatments to kill larvae living in water and the blood-thirsty flies.
āNow is the time to double down on prevention and protection,ā Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Wednesday in Doral.
The county announced the testing of a new truck with mounted equipment spraying an organic pesticide that both the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency consider non-toxic to humans and animals.
āIt uses less pesticide,ā Levine Cava said adding that it was also cost effective.
The Florida Department of Health is also involved in the ongoing effort to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses such as Zika, a viral infection.
