Miami-Dade tests new spraying truck to help control mosquitoes during peak season

DORAL, Fla. – Peak mosquito season is from May to October and Miami-Dade County is testing a new way to help keep the population under control.

The county’s Mosquito Control Division team uses ground spray treatments to kill larvae living in water and the blood-thirsty flies.

ā€œNow is the time to double down on prevention and protection,ā€ Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Wednesday in Doral.

The county announced the testing of a new truck with mounted equipment spraying an organic pesticide that both the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency consider non-toxic to humans and animals.

ā€œIt uses less pesticide,ā€ Levine Cava said adding that it was also cost effective.

The Florida Department of Health is also involved in the ongoing effort to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses such as Zika, a viral infection.
