BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Humane Society of Broward is overflowing with kittens, and one of them stole the spotlight during a Local 10 News “Adopt a Pet” segment Saturday morning.
Oscar, along with his brother Graham, are 10-week-old siblings who were rescued from a ditch when they were just days old.
“They were found in a puddle at the bottom of a construction site ditch,” said HSBC’s Cherie Wachter. “A volunteer foster parent bottle-fed them until they were strong enough to eat solid food.”
Oscar, a snuggler, quickly made himself at home in the anchor’s arms, while Graham, the more energetic of the two, seemed eager to explore the studio.
Wachter said it’s officially kitten season, with more than 70 kittens currently in the shelter’s care. She added that all pets are spayed or neutered before adoption to help curb the growing population of unwanted animals.
The shelter isn’t just home to cats and dogs. Wachter said they’ve taken in so many rabbits that they can’t accept any more right now.
“We have close to a dozen rabbits available, and many do better in pairs,” she said. “If you mention you saw me on Channel 10 today, you can adopt a rabbit for half price.”
Wachter also gave a shout-out to Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett, who underwrites the adoption fee for a pet every time he scores a goal during the playoffs. As of Saturday, adoption fees for two cats and two dogs had already been covered.
