Theo, with striking ice-blue eyes and a curious personality, was featured on Local 10’s “Adopt a Pet” segment Saturday.

HSBC representatives said that while training a deaf dog requires patience and consistency, Theo is eager to learn.

“You can train them with hand signals,” said Cherie Wachter, vice president of marketing at the shelter. “It can be a little challenging, but once you get it nailed down, they’re really good.”

Theo weighs about 41 pounds and is described as gentle and social, getting along well with children, cats and other dogs. Wachter said a home with another dog could be especially helpful.

“If you have a dog at home, that would really help Theo because he could follow the other dog around,” she said. “If you let the dog out in the backyard to run around and you call your other dog, Theo will know it’s time to come in.”

In addition to being playful and curious, Wachter called Theo a “cuddle bug” who would love a cozy bed and plenty of attention.

Adoptions at the Humane Society of Broward County begin with a pre-adoption application online at humanebroward.com.

Kennels open daily at 11 a.m., and families are encouraged to visit the shelter together. For those who already have dogs at home, the society will schedule a meet-and-greet to ensure compatibility.

“We have such a variety of incredible-looking dogs and cats,” Wachter said. “Today would be a great day to head out to the shelter and make a difference in the life of a homeless animal.”
