OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy faced a charge as an adult for a 14-year-old boy’s murder during a fight over a PlayStation at a foster home in Oakland Park, records show.
Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Ruben Whitworth after a stabbing on Aug. 25 at 5464 NE 3 Ave., a group home associated with One Hope United, a nonprofit organization that provides foster home services.
Ruben faced an adult second-degree murder with a weapon charge, and corrections booked him on Thursday at the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale after the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice’s release.
Broward County inmate records showed the description of the charge for 14-year-old Jordan Dowdy’s murder as “dangerous,” “depraved,” and without “premeditation.”
Tiffany Simpson and several neighbors said Jordan, who loved to play football, had told them Ruben had been threatening him, and he lived in fear at the group home.
“He had a big heart, he loved everybody that he came in contact with, he loved football,” Simpson said, adding that her son was in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 to remain anonymous.
